History of Banks in Nepal
The establishment of the Nepal Bank Limited in 1937 A.D. marked the beginning of the formal banking sector in Nepal. Nepal Bank Limited was established as a semi-government bank with an authorized capital of Rs.10 million and a paid-up capital of Rs.892 thousand and since it was the only bank present during the time, it had to also take up the role of the central bank of the country and carry out its duties as well. Seeing that the metallic coins were the only used medium of exchange until the mid-1940s, His Majesty’s Government, known as the Nepal Government now, felt the need of a separate institution that would issue national currencies. So, in 1956 A.D., Nepal Rastra Bank was established and was officially declared as the central bank of Nepal after the formulation and the approval of the Nepal Rastra Bank Act 1955. Since then, it has been regulating and supervising banks and institutions that have been established in Nepal.
In the late 1980s, the introduction of the financial liberalization policies in Nepal gave pathway for foreign investments to establish several joint venture banks. Following suit, a substantial amount of domestic investors also started investing in the banking sectors and thus, there were a total of 218 banks and financial institutions (BFIs) by the end of the fiscal year 2011. But after halting of new licenses, introduction of merger and acquisitions policies, and mandatory requirements to increase paid up capital, the banking industry saw the decline in the number of BFIs. Now, as of mid-July 2017, there are a total of 149 BFIs in operation.
Types of Banks in Nepal
The Nepal Rastra Bank has classified the banking institutions into four categories on the basis of minimum paid-up capital and has accordingly provided the suitable license to the institutions. These four categories are: Class ‘A’ Banks, Class ‘B’ Banks, Class ‘C’ Banks and the Class ‘D’ Banks. These four groups include commercial banks, development banks, financial institutions and micro credit development banks respectively.

The central bank of Nepal, Nepal Rastra Bank, also known as the reserve bank, is the monopolised and nationalised institution which is responsible for the formulation and the regulation of the monetary policies of the country and also supervises and regulates the banks and financial institutions in Nepal. The Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2002, has made it an autonomous institution. It supervises the activities of the banks and financial institutions based on the existing legal framework, regulations issued through its own Regulation Department, the internal manuals, and major international guiding policies.
