Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and Floriculture Management

Introduction

Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and Floriculture Management (B.Sc in HFM) is a fairly recent program approved by Tribhuvan University. It is a four-year program which is divided into eight semesters. Horticulture is the science of cultivating and managing plants. It is a branch of plant agriculture. Floriculture is a branch of horticulture which deals with the production and management of flowers. This program was designed to produce manpower than could utilize as well as preserve the natural resources that Nepal has to provide. Besides that, it is also designed to help people adjust to the rapidly developing field of horticulture and floriculture. This program is designed for those who are interested in plant agriculture.

Objectives

Besides producing quality manpower and utilizing the resources of Nepal, the objective of this program are as follows:

  • to introduce promote horticulture and floriculture development
  • to teach students about the importance of horticulture and floriculture to the economy
  • to support and encourage self-employment in the growing agro-business
  • to produce highly skilled and knowledge-based manpower

Scope

This course allows for a wide range of opportunities in the field of horticulture and floriculture. In a field that is becoming rapidly popular, some of the job opportunities that are available in this field are:

  • interior landscape development
  • venue  decorator
  • plant breeding
  • commercial nursery
  • garden landscaping and decoration
  • ornamental technologist

Tribhuvan University

This program is currently only provided by Tribhuvan University. It is conducted by the Institute of Science and Technology of TU. The program is offered by Mahendra Ratna Multiple Campus, Illam.

Mahendra Ratna Multiple Campus, Illam

Mahendra Ratna is a constituent college of TU established in 1960. It is the first campus in Nepal to offer B.Sc. in HFM. As an autonomous campus, it decided to propose a curriculum for HFM, which was approved by TU. This campus was established to provide quality education and produce skilled manpower.

Course Structure

The program is divided throughout the eight semesters. The total program is worth 3100 marks. The program includes courses that will help to achieve the objectives of the course. There is a total of 50 courses within the program. The program includes both theoretical and practical courses.

Eligibility

For the applicants to be eligible to apply for this program, they need to fulfill one of the following criteria:

  • passed +2 Science with second division
  • passed I.Sc. or, I.Sc. in Agriculture/Forestry with second division

The applicant  must have achieved one of the criteria from an institute or board recognized by TU.
