Introduction
Master of Science in Watershed Management is a two-year program which is divided into four semesters. The program is associated with natural resource management. Watershed is an area of land, which contributes to streams and rivers as it drains the water under underneath it into them. Management of watershed allows for the conservation and maintenance of both land and water, along with other natural resources that exist within them like minerals and flora. This course was designed for those interested in natural resource management and especially those interested in water resource management.
Objectives
The objectives of this course are as follows:
- to produce high-level technical professionals who can provide quality services to various agencies associated with watershed and watershed management
- to produce self-sufficient manpower in the field of watershed management
- to utilize the resources that are not fully utilized and to explore new resources that can be utilized in this field of study
- to help form a professional relationship with various agencies and organizations associated with watershed management
Scope
After the completion of the course, the graduates can get job opportunities in various government and private sectors, primarily in NGO and INGOs. The job opportunities are mostly related to development activities. Some of the jobs one can pursue are:

- Consultant
Availability
This course is currently offered by Tribhuvan University only. This course is available in Institute of Forestry, Pokhara Campus which is one of the institutes of TU.
Institute of Forestry, Pokhara Campus (IOF-PC)
Established in 1981, IOF-PC is the central campus of IOF, which is one of the five institutes of TU. IOF was originally managed by the Department of Forestry and was only incorporated into TU in 1972. After IOF’s new beginning, it was noticed that there was a high demand for manpower in the field of forestry and natural resource management in Nepal. IOF-PC was established with the mission to provide quality education and produce quality manpower that could efficiently manage the natural resources of the country.

Course structure
The course is divided into four semesters. The first three semesters all have total course content worth 13 credit hours, and the last semester has a total course content worth 11 credit hours. The whole course is worth a total of 50 credit hours.
First Semester
The courses in the first semester are:
- Community Forest and Governance
- National Resource Economics
- Non-timber Forest Products
- Global Environmental Change
- Watershed Management
- Soil Genesis and Geomorphology
Second Semester
The courses in the second semester are:
- Agroforestry
- Rural Development
- Conservation and Rural Development
- Soil Conservation Engineering and Watershed Rehabilitation
- Land Evaluation and Land Use Planning
- Statistical Method and Data Management
Third Semester
In this semester, there are both compulsory courses and electives. The
- Compulsory:
- Research Methodology and Participatory Action Research
- Geographical Information Science
- Watershed Hydrological Issues
- Seminar: Proposal Presentation
- Electives:
Out of the electives that are offered, the student must register for at least two of the electives. The electives offered are:
- Bioenergy
- Project Management
- Experiential Learning
- Programming C++
Fourth Semester
The courses in the fourth semester are:
- Thesis
- Seminar: Thesis Presentation
Eligibility criteria
In order to apply for this course, applicants must fulfill the following criteria:
- An applicant should have achieved at least one of the following:
- A three-year degree in Bachelor of Science B.Sc. in Forestry/Agriculture/Environmental Science/Environmental Management
- A three-year degree in Bachelor of Engineering BE in Agricultural Engineering/Environmental Engineering/Civil Engineering
- B.Sc with major in Soil/Hydrology/Geology/Metrology
The degree must have been achieved from TU or any other university recognized by TU.
