What Is the IOE Entrance Exam?

The IOE Entrance Examination is the gateway to undergraduate engineering and architecture programs under the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University — Nepal’s oldest and most prestigious engineering institution. IOE conducts the entrance exam through its Entrance Examination Board. The examination is fully computer-based and held at designated test centres. Only candidates who pass the entrance examination are eligible for admission to BE (Bachelor of Engineering) and B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) programs under IOE.

Eligibility Requirements

Application Process

Seat Distribution: Scholarship vs Full-Paying

Subject-Wise Preparation Strategy

Mathematics (Priority 1 — Highest Weightage)

Mathematics carries the largest share of marks and is often the differentiator between passing and topping the exam.

• Focus areas: Calculus (limits, differentiation, integration), coordinate geometry, algebra (matrices, determinants), and trigonometry together account for the bulk of mathematics questions.
• Practice approach: Solve a minimum of 20-30 problems daily. Focus on speed and accuracy since the 2-hour time limit is tight for 100 questions.
• Common mistakes: Careless sign errors in calculus and failing to simplify trigonometric expressions. Always double-check critical steps.

Physics (Priority 2)

Exam Day Tips

1. Arrive early: Reach the examination centre at least 45 minutes before the scheduled time. Carry your admit card and a valid photo ID.
2. Time management: With 100 questions in 120 minutes, you have roughly 72 seconds per question. Tackle easy questions first to secure guaranteed marks.
3. Be cautious with 2-mark questions: These carry double the marks but also double the negative marking penalty. Only attempt them if you are reasonably confident.
4. Manage the negative marking: Since the penalty is 10% of marks allotted, random guessing on 1-mark questions is nearly break-even if you can eliminate even one option. For 2-mark questions, only guess if you can narrow it down to two options.
5. Dress comfortably: Exam centres may be cold due to air conditioning. Wear layers.
6. Stay calm during technical issues: CBT-based exams occasionally face minor technical hiccups. Raise your hand and inform the invigilator immediately. Lost time due to technical problems is typically compensated.
7. Carry only essentials: Mobile phones and electronic devices are usually not permitted inside the examination hall. Leave them at home or in designated lockers.
